GYNAE ONCOLOGY
Putting some light on Gynae Oncology
Gynae oncology is a specialised field of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cancers affecting the female reproductive system, including the ovaries, uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina, and vulva. Gynae oncologists are trained in both obstetrics and gynaecology as well as oncology to provide comprehensive care for women with gynaecology cancers
Some common risk factors associated with gynaecology cancers
- Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection: HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection.
-
Age: The risk of developing gynecologic cancers increases with age. For example, most cases of ovarian cancer occur in women over the age of 50.
- Family history and inherited gene mutations: A family history of certain gynaecology cancers, such as ovarian or breast cancer, may increase the risk of developing gynaecology cancers.
-
Smoking: Smoking is a known risk factor for several cancers, including cervical and vulvar cancers.
Treatment modalities used in the management of gynecologic cancers:
- Surgery: Surgery is often the primary treatment for gynecologic cancers. The extent of surgery depends on the type and stage of the cancer.
- Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells or prevent their growth. It can be administered before surgery (neoadjuvant chemotherapy) to shrink the tumour, after surgery (adjuvant chemotherapy) to eliminate any remaining cancer cells, or as the primary treatment for advanced or recurrent cancers
- Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays or other forms of radiation to kill cancer cells or shrink tumours.
- Targeted therapy: Targeted therapy drugs specifically target certain molecular or genetic abnormalities in cancer cells.
What our patients say…
I recently received gynae oncology treatment at this clinic and I have to say I am very grateful for the care I received. From the initial consultation to the follow-up appointments, the staff and doctors were incredibly supportive, compassionate, and knowledgeable.
The doctors took the time to explain my diagnosis and treatment options in detail, which helped me make informed decisions. They also provided emotional support, which was very important to me during this difficult time.
